Friday: a mix born from a noisy bus ride

It’s been a while since I’ve made a mix. Noisy high schools kids on the ride home from work on Friday “inspired” me to start a mix right then and there. Turning on an album wasn’t cutting it.

And then I finished it off this afternoon:

I hope it helps with any pants problems that might come your way.

New Obsessions

I’ve really been listening to music again in a big way this year. I killed my awesome set of fancy Shure earbuds and replaced them with some Monster Turbines. I’ve been listening to a lot of new(er) albums and discovering new (to me) artists. Since I’ve been out of the game, most of my “discoveries” are really me being a little late to the party. Oh wells. Good music is good music whenever you find it. Considering I kept the Josie and the Pussycats soundtrack on several generations of iPod, I’m not too concerned about my reputation.

So here’s a motley list, in no particular order, of things that have made a big impression in the past while and a half. Some “new” discoveries. Some intense re-acquaintances. Some ongoing love affairs.

Surfer Blood, The Gaslight Anthem, Camera Obscura, Belle and Sebastian, Arcade Fire, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Metric, Best Coast, Joanna Newsom, Vampire Weekend, Blonde Redhead (played the new album 5 times back to back), The Raconteurs, Jens Lekman, The National, Beach House (despite the hipster following I really enjoy Teen Dream), Ryan Adams, The Dead Weather, The White Stripes, Florence and the Machine, Lykke Li, Wild Nothing (I’ve been starting my days with them for a week), Cold War Kids, Dum Dum Girls and the Rural Alberta Advantage.

I’ve also started going to live musical performances again in a big way. Not since my London days have I kept my social calendar thus populated with activities and I love it. Tonight I’ll be seeing the Rural Alberta Advantage here in snowy MTL and though I’m nursing the beginnings of a cold, I would not miss it for the world. I was a little sceptical at first due to some douche bag description found online somewhere but once I listened, I stuck it on repeat. I’m sure I’ll be listening to them over and over in the coming weeks.
